What do we mean by Jupiter’s transit (Guru peyarchi)?
We observe a planet’s transit or movement. What does this mean? It is like us moving into a new house. Similarly, the transiting planets are said to change houses. This is what we mean by a planet’s transit. Do planets move into a new house? Some may say this is disturbing, but the earth which we inhabit and where we live does appear as us sitting in the middle under a rounded sky. Our ancestors, the rishis and seers have calculated the time taken by these transiting planets. Firstly, they divided the 360 degree sky into twelve 30 degree segments or raasis as they are called and named each of them as follows – Mesham (Aries), Vrishabham (Taurus), Mithunam (Gemini), Kadakam (Cancer), Simmam (Leo), Kanni (Virgo), Thulam (Libra), Vrishikam (Scorpio), Dhanusu (Sagittarius), Makaram (Capricorn), Kumbham (Aquarius), and Meenam (Pisces). This became the measure of time as well. It is on this basis that the watch on our wrist is also divided into twelve hours. If the time taken by a planet to traverse one raasi is calculated, the time taken for its full journey over the twelve raasis would be known. It is when a planet completes its journey and returns to, from where it began, is what we term as the planet’s transit (Kirahap Peyarchi). In our Temple, a wonderful Navagraha Havan is to take place in honour of this transition. We kindly invite all devotees to participate in the Navagraha homam as befits their raasis and nakshatras (stars).
